1979 Highlights

Petty broke a 45-race dry spell by taking the 1979 Daytona 500, passing the wrecked cars of Yarborough and Alison and edging out Darrell Waltrip by a single car length. Richard's son Kyle finished 9th in his first Winston Cup start in race #20 at Talladega, but was beaten by dad who placed fourth. A win at the Champion Spark Plug 400 brought the King to within 155 points of leader Darrell Waltrip. By season's end, Petty's hard charging earned him his 7th Championship, 11 points ahead of the disappointed 2nd place Waltrip.
