Petty took the checkered flag at Daytona in his 7th Daytona 500 win before 130,000 enthusiastic fans. Petty's Buick finished 3.5 seconds in front of 2nd place Bobby Allison. Petty won his 15th North Wilkesboro victory, scooting by his competitors on a slick, recently resurfaced track. In his 195th winning effort, Richard outran 7 challengers to take victory in the Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan.
