Petty's Early Racing History

Petty began racing at age 21 on July 18, 1958 in Toronto, Canada. In his first effort he placed 17th and won a mere $115. The young and eager Petty scored his first win at the old dirt track at Columbia, South Carolina in a 100-mile convertible race on July 18, 1959. Richard's first super-speedway win came in the 1964 Daytona 500. He became the first million dollar driver after the Dixie 500 in Atlanta, Georgia in 1971. In 1972, Petty signed a sponsorship agreement with STP forming the longest driver/sponsor relationship in history.
